TSA screened 15,811,484 passengers nationwide over the Thanksgiving 2018 travel period (Tue, Nov 20 – Mon, Nov 26, 2018), up 6.1% from 14,902,253 over the same period a year earlier. The busiest day was Sunday, November 25, with 2,661,847 screenings.

The busiest airports by departing passengers screened were Los Angeles International Airport (LAX, about 786,000), John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK, about 601,000) and Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD, about 517,000). Among states, California led with about 2.3 million.

The Thanksgiving travel period is the Tuesday before Thanksgiving through the Monday after (7 days), the period TSA itself reports. It is compared with the same period a year earlier (Tue, Nov 21 – Mon, Nov 27, 2017). National figures add up every airport in TSA's FOIA checkpoint files, because TSA's published daily totals do not cover both periods; they run a few percent below the published totals. Airport and state figures add up TSA's FOIA hourly checkpoint throughput files; they count departing passengers screened, not arrivals or connecting passengers, so they run below airport-reported totals. An airport is included only when TSA's files are complete for it on every day of both periods (369 of 411 reporting airports); nothing is estimated.
